Chhat Puja 2024
Chhath Puja is a significant Hindu festival primarily celebrated in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and among the people of the Terai region of Nepal. It honors the Sun God (Surya) and his wife, Usha, focusing on their role in sustaining life and prosperity.
The festival lasts four days, beginning on the sixth day of the Hindu month of Kartik (usually in October or November). Devotees perform rigorous rituals, including fasting, cleansing, and offering prayers during sunrise and sunset. The highlight is making offerings (arghya) to the Sun while standing in water, often at riverbanks or other bodies of water.
Chhath Puja is marked by vibrant community participation, traditional songs, and the preparation of special foods, especially "thekua" (a sweet made from wheat flour). The festival emphasizes gratitude, devotion, and respect for nature, celebrating the bond between the Earth and its inhabitants.
